Clean Up After The Great Fruitcake Toss

Being a Pig Has Never Sounded So Good

Another Great Fruitcake Toss has come and gone. And just like always, it was a spectacular day filled with family, friends, fun, and of course, fruitcake. But all good things must come to an end. So, as the good people of Manitou Springs clean up from a wild weekend of cake throwing, a curious question tugged at the corner of our minds: “What happens with all those leftover fruitcakes?

We really had no idea. So, we reached out to Jenna Gallas, the Special Events Coordinator at the Manitous Springs Chamber of Commerce. Her reply blew us away. Let's just say, being a pig has never sounded so good.  Keep scrolling to read Jenna's response.

“Hey there, fruitcake fans!

It's Jenna Gallas from the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce here to talk about fruitcake. As you know, every year, we host an amazing event called the Great Fruitcake Toss. And, every year it's tons of fun! But, once the event is done, we've got some cleaning up to do. That means gathering all the beaten and battered leftover fruitcakes and finding the best place to dispose of them. We could throw them all in the trash, but that would go against the charitable mission fueling The Great Fruitcake Toss.

You see, attendees of the event can participate in the festivities by bringing a non-perishable food item in exchange for admission. After the event, all donations are gathered and delivered to the Manitou Springs Food Pantry. So as you can see, the Great Fruitcake Toss’ overall goal is to provide food to the hungry. So it makes no sense to throw out our leftover fruitcake. Luckily, a local resident reached out to provide the Chamber with a unique and creative solution to our dessert dilemma. That solution? --PIGS!

The terrific folks at the Smokebrush Farm at SunMountain Center helped us craft a perfect solution to our abundance of fruitcake leftovers. Being a biodynamic farm, Smokebrush emphasizes a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition. Their farm contains a variety of animals including Jezebel, an 11-year-old Micro Vietnamese Potbelly Pig. Since each cake is made with only three ingredients: coffee, flour, and raisins, they are perfectly safe for animal consumption. Not to mention, they are a pretty tasty treat to boot.

For a number of years now, Smokebrush Farm has been a proud partner of the Great Fruitcake Toss, allowing our two organizations to help create a no-waste cycle for our fruitcakes. So, no sweating fruitcake waste. The Manitou Chamber of Commerce and all the cute animals at the Smokebrush Farms are on it. Till next year fruitcake family!

With love & fruitcake,

Jenna Gallas | Special Events Coordinator at the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce

Leftover Fruitcake?—We’ve Got An Idea for You!

Now, just to be clear, we don’t recommend feeding our leftover fruitcake to your pets. Our fruitcakes are meant for people! But, we do encourage you to find new and exciting ways to indulge your human sweet tooth. In fact, we just recently dreamt up an amazing new recipe! It’s called DeLicious Fruitcake Dessert Dip. Made with six simple ingredients, plus our DeLuxe® Fruitcake, this dessert dip is scoopable, snackable, and downright addictive.
