Fruitcake Fraud on Discovery+

A True Crime Story About Money & Fruitcake

Collin Street Bakery’s embezzlement scandal is in the news again. But this time, it’s a good thing! Recently, the Bakery was featured on Discovery+’s newest true-crime documentary, “Fruitcake Fraud.” What the show's trailer down below!

Watch the Trailer Here

The Plot of Fruitcake Fraud

The show follows FBI agent Christine Edson and her colleagues as they reflect on the nearly decade-long embezzlement scheme undertaken by Sandy Jenkins, the bakery’s accountant. Sandy, who used his position as the keeper of the bakery’s financial keys to fuel an opulent lifestyle complete with pricey cars, high-end watches, and a luxurious Santa Fe home, stole close to 17 million dollars from the Bakery. His 9-year spending spree continued until 2013 when federal agents knocked on his door. Even though Sandy was caught, that didn’t stop him from one last attempt at salvaging his ill-gotten gains. Greed, as they say, is one devilish demon.

The 90-minute exposé, which launched in early December 2021, has received a five-star rating on Amazon and an onslaught of rave reviews from the media and viewers alike. Check out just a handful of publications singing the show’s praises:

”STREAM IT. Fruitcake Fraud may leave you wondering just how an entire $30 million enterprise could be fleeced for so long and so much money, but the story about how Jenkins got caught and how he and his wife spent their ill-gotten funds is entertaining enough to get past that.” - Decider
”Whether you are a fruitcake fan or pass that holiday dessert onto someone else, Fruitcake Fraud on Discovery+ is a delicacy to savor this holiday season.” -FoodSided
”Fruitcake Fraud… [is] an FBI case that truly takes the cake.” - E! Online
”...perfect for the holidays!” - Pop Culture
”A festive story of fraud...” - Mashed

I saw the show and decided to buy one of your fruitcakes because you all appeared so kind even after what you experienced. It was delicious and just what I expected; chock full of nuts and fruit with a higher proportion of them to batter.

Our fruitcake arrived just in time for New Years. I love fruitcake. My Mom made hers every Christmas for probably 40 years. It was excellent…your fruitcake is even better. Love it

Very disappointed. Ordered Fruit Cake and Texas Blonde. Both were dry and Texas Blonde ended up in the trash. Will order Eilenbergers or The Nuns of New Skete next time:-(

Since 1975, I have sent a Collin St Bakery fruitcake yearly to the host family I lived with in Japan as a university exchange student. That's almost five decades! Of course, I also order one for my own family. Everyone here and abroad loves eating the nutty goodness. I don't like candied fruit but the balance in Collin St Bakery's fruitcake is perfect. The pecans are a delight. One year we sent the blonde cake but we switched back to the regular. It's a winner, every single time!

I’ve been loving your fruitcakes for years. My best friend (in her 60s) saw your tin in my home last Christmas and told me how her grandmother used to get one every year. I gave her one for Christmas this year and she cried. She said it was the best Christmas gift she had ever gotten.

My wife and I have found your apricot pecan cake to be dreamy. It could not be better. This year I ordered the cake and some pecans. On a whim, I added pineapple bites. OMG!!! They were fabulous. So, having no other reasonable choice, I ordered the pineapple pecan cake. Five days later, reading reviews on the site, I felt compelled to order the fudge cake. In the meantime, by some glorious divine plan, you accidentally sent my first order again! I wish I were a runner, like Cam McKinney, above.

I've developed Celiac condition recently, so the gluten free fruitcake hopefully will be the answer for me. I've eaten many different fruitcakes through the years, and never tasted one I did not like. Collins Street fruitcakes are good, as they all are, but none compares to my grandmother's and my mother's fruitcakes, no ifs, ands, or buts! Sadly, they've both been gone, now for several years, so Collins Street will have to fill their shoes, and Collins Street is up to the task!

I also have celiac and tried the gluten-free one this holiday season, and it was fantastic! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did- I’ll definitely order one next year. It had been over 20 years since I’d had fruitcake!

I put an order in for your fruitcake, after I read an article naming Collins as one of the two oldest, most famous fruitcakes in the U.S. I am the only one in my family who likes fruitcakes. I've heard all the jokes that run down fruitcakes, and know they are very out of fashion. But around Xmas time I just hanker for them. Yes they are too rich, too sweet, and go down like a brick. But if you eat only a small piece once a day it satisfies an urge for the rich and sweet. It says something about the owners of Collin Street that they can be philosophical about the embezzlement, and in fact share the notoriety with us. I worked for 20+ years in the town of Dixon, IL, and only several years ago it was discovered that the town comptroller had been embezzling funds for decades to the tune of $50 million. So, it is unfortunately a universal story. There are always going to be very charming thieves and parasites among us.

Fruitcake Fraud! Glad person was prosecuted. Like no one was going to catch them lol! My family since I can remember has been buying Collin Street Bakery products since in 1960’s when I was in grade school! Being from East TX it’s a must to have such delicious baked goods! My brother even has his own in December for his birthday besides each of our families having their own! Thank you for years of wonderful service!

Great fruitcake! My grandmother always made fruitcake with her sisters-in-laws. 4-6 ladies would gather around the kitchen table cutting and chopping all the myriad ingredients. Then someone discovered we could buy the cakes from your bakery! Been a customer for a long time. I am now 78 and eating on my Christmas fruitcake which is almost gone! Keep up the good work!

I have buying these fruit cakes for 40 years. That, in its self, is a testament to their taste and value. I owned a Real Estate Brokerage and, every year, that year's clients got a fruitcake as a 'Thank You' . They loved them. I still buy them, as Christmas presents, for family and friends.

Ordered my first one this year. Very disappointed.. Cake is crumbly and very doughy, like not baked long enough. Keep it refrigerated, but did not help. Cake was way too boozy. Really like the amount of fruit and nuts used in the cake.

There are directions to add alcohol to the fruitcake yourself… but don’t think you ca. Purchase them with “booz”. Collin Street fruitcakes have been part of our family holiday tradition for over 40 years..have never received a dry or a gummy cake… my sister in law isn’t a fruitcake fan but my brother has to guard his cake or she will pick out the pecans… which these cakes are chock full of

I have been a customer for longer than I can remember. I was never fond of fruitcakes until tasting yours. You made a believer of me. Your cakes are so full of pecans and, to me, that's the secret. Oh my dear, I have baked my own fruit cakes for many years, and the cost for quality ingredients almost equals the cost of buying one from Collin Street Bakery. As with many things one does there is the pride factor, but really, they are pro's and the price of presentation, quality of ingredients, consistancy, convenience, time factors... and so very many other factors make these cakes real bargains! I love them! (p.s. I am not on their payroll for making comments.)

I have eaten this fruitcake for decades as my husband requests it every year. The original fruitcake has always been absolutely wonderful! This year when they offered a gluten free version I decided to order it as I personally eat gf 95% of the time. When we got it I tried it and gave a piece to my husband who said it didn’t taste like fruitcake at all. I have to admit it was very dry which is pretty typical of most gluten free baked goods. I’ve had plenty of occasions to try them over the past 30 years. When Collin Street asked for my opinion about the gf version I had to tell them the truth and they very gladly and quickly replaced it with the regular version I requested. Im wondering if those of you who said your cake was dry got a gf one by mistake. As I said, the original fruitcake has always been and continues to be perfect!

My best friend has given me one of your large fruitcake for at least ten years now and every year they have been delicious. This year for some reason my cake was under cooked and some of the nuts tasted stale, other than that it was perfect. I will be putting in my own order to try some of the other cakes. Why do you have to make them so good. As John Mike stated above, I am also a type 2 diabetic and my blood sugars are always normal even after my physician took me off of my medication over a year ago. P.S, It only takes me four days to eat a large cake. Keep up the great work.

My mom made her own fruitcakes for a number of years, until she discovered that it was cheaper to buy them pre-made. For a long time, she (and I) bought Jane Parker cakes from the old A&P stores, but they disappeared from this area many years back. I can't recall when she and I discovered your version, which are even better than the Jane Parkers, but I've been ordering them for over thirty years now. Sorry about your accountant; but your cakes are still excellent! Keep up the good work. (And I've never had a bad one.)

I thought I hated fruitcakes. Well we watched Fruitcake Fraud and we’re so impressed at the integrity and kindness of the people who own and work at the bakery, we said we had to get a fruitcake! We drove to Corsicana and bought 3, ate them and shared them too fast, and promptly ordered another Delux. I don’t hate fruitcakes! I just hate poorly made ones! Your Delux cake was fabulous! I’m glad you made it through the embezzlement!

I have been ordering your fruitcakes for about 30 years now, for family and friends. My husband loves them and that’s his favorite Christmas present year after year. This year I ordered the chocolate covered cherry bites for myself, and they were delicious! Also spared my husband’s cake, as I enjoyed the little bites so much I left his cake to him alone - which has not always been true in the past. Thanks for making such a delicious product.

I ordered two of your fruit cakes right before Christmas. I used to help my Mother make these at home. I was surprised that the cake batter was so dark. There was not enough batter for the amount of pecans in it. You mostly just tasted pecans, which were good, but just too many in this small cake. We had started to crumble the pecans in very small pieces and just put the whole ones on top. The cake was good. I'm not so sure I would want another one like what I got. I might try a different one. I want to taste the solid part of the cake too.
